Welcome to our blog. Almost six years have passed since we first began our work on They Carried Us. During that time, we conducted research that allowed us to shape the stories of 47 forerunners who lived between the 17th and 20th centuries. The text also richly includes the stories of 48 contemporary women with whom we conducted extensive interviews. While all of the women left indelible marks on the city of Philadelphia, many were influential nationally and internationally.
February 29, 2020 marks the next phase of this project, with the official launch of and celebration of the women profiled in this 600-page tome. Musical performances by two young women, dramatic readings from the book, the dedication of a time capsule to the School District of Philadelphia's Class of 2045, and a rendering closing address by a youth leader, we think, appropriately cast our gaze to the future—one that we hope will continue to shine greater focus on the achievements and contributions of black women.
Thereafter, we will begin a series of book signings and speaking engagements that are detailed on our Events page. Do reach out to us via our Contact page if you are interested in hosting an event. We also intend to regularly update this Blog page with discussions of current interest to us all.
The development of They Carried Us has been a journey of hard work, personal growth, learning and love. It is an experience that we will treasure forever.
